Millwall midfielder reportedly closing in on move back to homeland
Maikel Keiftenbeld is reportedly set to sign for Dutch side FC Emmen when his Millwall contract expires.
The Lions had still been in negotiations with the midfielder over new terms. Kieftenbeld will be a free agent at the start of next month.
Now RTV Drenthe Sport are claiming that the former Birmingham City player will make a return to his home country.
Emmen won the Eerste Divisie title last season and will be in the top flight for the 2022-23 campaign.
Kieftenbeld, speaking to the South London Press in late April, said: “I spoke to the club during the season and they told me they would look at it at the end of the season, which is fair enough. I can understand – there are more important things than Maikel Kieftenbeld at the moment because we are pushing for the play-offs.
“I’m confident the club or the manager will get in contact with me at the end of the season about my future.
“I’m not from England and there will be a time that I go back to Holland to be around my family and friends a bit more.
“I know I love England, I love the Championship and I love Millwall – the fans and the people who work here. I’m really enjoying it.
“When I first signed for Birmingham, I never thought I would stay this long in England but it is just the people, the clubs, the fans and the whole atmosphere in the stadiums. First I saw it at Birmingham and now I see it at Millwall.”
