Millwall player-coach: Fine margins of finishing cost us in draw against Cardiff City

Shaun Williams was left ruing Millwall’s missed chances in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff City.

The Lions player-coach provided the cross for Matt Smith to head home in the first half.

Ben Thompson and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson both failed to hit the target from excellent opportunities either side of Kieffer Moore’s equaliser.

Williams said: “We probably feel a bit unlucky we didn’t win the game, through the two good chances that we missed. It’s probably two points dropped overall.

“We felt comfortable with the lead and if Thommo scores his header it probably would’ve been game over. But they are the fine margins you’ve got to take.

“Second half it opened up a little bit – they changed shape and we changed shape – and just had to battle away to the end.

“We were effective on the counter-attack and it’s probably something we need to get a little bit better at. With Jon’s chance if he tucks it away then we don’t worry about the result, because we win.

“Sometimes you only get one chance in a game. It could be the defining moment.”

Millwall have picked up a number of injuries with Connor Mahoney, Mahlon Romeo, Kenneth Zohore and Billy Mitchell all sidelined. Mason Bennett came off with a muscle problem at the weekend.

Williams said: “We’re such a good group that we’ll get around the lads who are injured – they’ve got to work hard to get back as soon as they can but obviously not rush it so they pull injuries again.

“We’ll have to knuckle down and stick together.”
