Millwall striker needs just two more goals to make it 100 at club level – with eight games to hit milestone this season

Millwall manager Gary Rowett is hoping that Benik Afobe can reach a century of career goals before his loan spell ends in SE16.

The Stoke City striker moved to 98 at club level after a brace in the 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town last month.

But Afobe could then not face his parent club in the last fixture before the international break.

The 29-year-old, who started on the books of Arsenal and is on his second spell with the Lions, is back available for Saturday’s match at Luton Town.

“Certainly 100 goals for a striker puts them on a list of players who have excelled in the Football League and Premier League,” said Rowett. “And I imagine that would be important to Benik.

“It is typical really for us of late, a striker scores two goals and plays really well and then is unavailable for the next game! It has been a little bit the story of our season so far. It’s good to have him back and for him to be full of confidence.

“Those kind of milestones, getting them up there with other players who have done similar things, is important to any striker. Any other position and you’re probably just looking at appearances alone and it’s not as big a thing for a defender, in some ways.”
