Millwall winger Jed Wallace: Salary cap needs to be tweaked – big clubs need to be able to act like big clubs

Jed Wallace reckons more work needs to go into the salary cap plans for the English game.

League One clubs have already voted in spending restrictions which equate to a maximum wage of £2,000 a week per player.

There are also plans to impose a curb for the Championship but that will not come into play for the 2020-21 campaign.

Millwall winger Wallace said: “The salary cap in League One and the Championship makes no sense.

“If you are Leeds or Aston Villa in the Championship then you shouldn’t have the same outgoings as Barnsley or Wycombe if you are getting 35,000 fans through the door every game and selling shirts all around the world. You should be able to put that back into the club.

“We’ve seen a couple of clubs penalised for cheating and I get that. Everyone wants it to be fair. But is it fair having Sunderland and Portsmouth being able to pay the same as Accrington and Rochdale? In my opinion it’s not.

“It’s also not fair if people are blatantly cheating.

“What we do is up to someone who has been to university for six years and wears a suit to work every day – not someone driving home in a Nike tracksuit.

“There has to be a middle ground. If it was made more fair for League One and also came in for the Championship then I don’t see it as a negative.

“But big clubs have got to be allowed to be big clubs – that’s how football works.”
