Millwall’s fans get special praise after part they played in win that keeps Championship play-off dream alive

Millwall made it four Championship wins on the spin – and Gary Rowett had praise for the home crowd for helping them pull through against Sheffield United.

The Lions went ahead when Jake Cooper headed home Jed Wallace’s free-kick in the 61st minute.

And the South Londoners then had to repel fairly heavy pressure from the Blades, who had been unbeaten in nine matches.

Rowett said: “There are some games where we have to get the place rocking ourselves with the performance and the games where the fans have got to help us – and they did today.

“They will always get behind the team if they can see the effort and drive. We’re out on our feet with probably half an hour to go but we kept going, we showed that resilience and made it very difficult for Sheffield United.

“They didn’t really have many good chances, so it wasn’t really like we were hanging on with really good chances against us. We were just hanging on without the ball, that’s the difference.”

The Lions are five points behind sixth-placed Luton Town with 13 matches remaining.

And Rowett wants his side to push hard as the finishing straight comes into sight.

“We’re pleased with recent results and we weren’t very pleased with results before that – it’s the Championship,” he said. “There are plenty of games to go, we want to finish the season strong, if we can.

“We know with the lack of bodies we’ve got some real hurdles and challenges – that might catch up with us at some point. But we’re certainly going to give it a helluva go to see where we can finish.”
