Millwall’s new striker signing backed to be starting matches soon after making positive early impressions
Andreas Voglsammer will be starting Millwall matches “soon”, with his game intelligence already earning praise from manager Gary Rowett.
The German striker, signed last week from Union Berlin, made his debut in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against Swansea City.
Voglsammer hit the bar for the South Londoners.
He was unable to play any part in last weekend’s victory over Coventry as he awaited a work permit.
“He is a top-quality player who has played at the top level in Germany,” Rowett told the South London Press. “We were absolutely delighted to bring him in. You saw his intelligence with some of the runs he made in behind, not least for the one where he manages to shape and control a half-volley on to the bar – that showed great technique as well.
“There was also the diligent way he comes on and knows when to press. He knows how to cut off passing lines to tactically help the team. I was really, really pleased with him.
“He’s another one where we probably just need to get him through two or three games first before he is then in a position to go full-blooded for 90 minutes. He has not started lots and lots of games for a while. I’m not going to say it will definitely be that way, but sometimes we feel it is more suitable to give him two or three games off the bench to impact it – then try and unleash him a little bit.
“He’s a player I expect to start for us soon. But it’s a tough week [with two away games in close proximity] and we’ll try to help out all the players where we can.”
