Millwall’s out of contract players facing wait to discover if they are offered new deals

Millwall director of football Steve Gallen says he will not be sitting down with any of their players due to be free agents next summer until their Championship status is secure.

The Lions have the likes of George Honeyman, Duncan Watmore, Shaun Hutchinson and Tom Bradshaw all set to be out of contract at the end of June.

George Saville and Ryan Leonard both had clauses in their last deals which were appearance-related and extended their stays until the summer of 2025.

Gallen told Millwall TV: “As you can imagine a couple of agents of players are ringing me up and asking me. The first thing to say is we have got a few out of contract and them lads are doing really, really well. My advice to those players is to just keep doing that.

“I’ve been speaking to the chairman about this and the rest of the board, we all feel we can’t start talking about contracts with anybody until we know we are in a safe position, that we’re not looking over our shoulder. We want to keep looking up the table but at the moment there won’t be contract talks with anybody whose contract is running out at the end of the season.

“With the senior players there is a cost to the football club but we also recognise the value they are bringing out there every Saturday. I’ll use Lenny as an example, the first thing I did when I got to the football club was give him a new and improved contract – he deserved it.

“It is very, very important for George Saville to be around at this football club. He has really helped the younger lads. He is a proper club man and we don’t lose sight of that.”
