Millwall’s Ryan Tunnicliffe: Overhead kick against Forest is best goal I have scored – and I don’t expect to top it
BY RICHARD CAWLEY
Ryan Tunnicliffe reckons his overhead kick for Millwall on Saturday is the best goal of his career.
The former Manchester United and Fulham midfielder scored the winner for the Lions against Nottingham Forest on Saturday – adapting quickly to hook the ball home as a home corner was not properly cleared.
“I don’t think many people score those in training – thankfully it hit the post and went in,” said Tunnicliffe.
“The ball bounced and I knew where the goal sort of was. That was the only technique to get the ball back towards the goals.
“It’s got to be top [of the goals he has scored], hasn’t it? I don’t think I’ll score a better one. Definitely top.
“It was a massive goal and back to back wins at home which is important over the Christmas period. We dug deep, defended like men, showed our heart and held on until the end.”
Forest were largely limited to shots from distance.
Tunnicliffe said: “I think that’s where we are back to out best – very compact, make teams play around us and force them to shoot from distance which you would think is the best way to go about it.
“We didn’t have many holes and any clearcut chances. It was a good shape for us.”
Millwall have taken all but three of their 25 points at The Den.
“Home form is vital for you – every season you play,” said Tunnicliffe. “Especially when we haven’t been going so great away from home – yet.
“The more points we can get here will make our life a lot easier.”
