“Misleading” – Millwall manager reacts to question on home form since start of 2020

Millwall picked up their first home Championship win of the season last night – and Gary Rowett has described any suggestion they have struggled at The Den since the turn of the year as “misleading”.

The Lions are undefeated in SE16 since the 2020-21 campaign kicked off.

Connor Mahoney and a Martin Cranie own goal earned a deserved maximum haul against Luton Town.

Millwall have won five, drawn six and lost three times in the league at home since January 1.

Asked about struggling at home, Rowett said: “That could be quite a misleading observation. If you look at the games with no fans, I think at the weekend there was only one home win in the whole of the Championship.

“I think we’re probably no different than a lot of teams. I think I read that Preston have struggled at home, Derby have struggled at home – so generally most teams haven’t played as well at home.

“Not having the advantage of the fans – it’s the opposition knowing you haven’t got the advantage of the fans, so it almost feels like a double whammy.

“That’s why I’m so pleased with tonight. It’s nice to hopefully back it up with another good home performance.”

Rowett made one change for the Luton Town match – bringing in Mason Bennett for Tom Bradshaw, who dropped to the bench.

Next up is Barnsley at home on Saturday. The Tykes are winless in the Championship and face a tough test ending that wait at in-form Stoke City this evening.

Rowett said: “We might need to change the squad. I know Barnsley play a day later than us, but they play a different formation.

“The players have been magnificent. Even if we don’t win games I can’t really fault them because they’ve given me so much energy and effort.”
