Nathan Jones: Charlton’s leading goalscorer Alfie May is a clever player

Nathan Jones has praised the cleverness of Alfie May after the Charlton Athletic striker added to his impressive goal haul in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Carlisle United.

The 30-year-old, signed from Cheltenham Town in the summer, is top of the League One scoring charts after his Valley double moved him on to 20 goals for the campaign.

May has 24 in all competitions for the Addicks.

He had scored once in 13 matches before converting a penalty in last month’s 2-1 win at Derby County.

May has followed up with three goals in his last two games.

“Strikers go through spells,” said Charlton manager Jones.

“He’s a clever player – a great lad.

“He is brilliant around the place. He thinks about his game and thinks about his movement.

“He doesn’t just go and play off the cuff. He’s a wonderful player. I said to him: ‘Things will turn, just keep doing the right things. Making the same, good runs’ and he has. Now he’s turned the corner. The new start was two goals in three. Now it’s four in four. It looks a lot rosier.”
