Nathan Jones explains reason for Tyreece Campbell’s absence at Southend United as Charlton Athletic’s injury list grows
Tyreece Campbell has become the latest addition to Charlton Athletic’s growing injury list.
The 21-year-old attacker missed the South Londoners’ trip to National League Southend United in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Campbell was on the receiving end of a cynical, scything challenge from Wrexham’s Sebastian Revan during a 2-2 draw at The Valley last weekend.
And despite featuring off the bench, and scoring, against Chelsea u21s in the EFL Trophy in midweek, manager Nathan Jones revealed it was the challenge during the clash with the Red Dragons last Saturday that forced Campbell to miss the trip to Roots Hall.
Jones explained: “He thought he could play through but when we scanned it there was something there that we’ve had to pull him out for. He only played 25 minutes in midweek and wasn’t at full pelt even though he scored. That’s been the thing that’s cost him today.
“As in my Wrexham interview, the disgraceful challenge that went relatively unpunished has caused him to have an injury. We’re more worried about getting out on time and me staying in my box [technical area] than actually making good decisions because that was a terrible challenge.
“He’s running at full pelt, the guy has come, not made any effort and wiped him clean out. That’s caused him an injury. So those are the things we need to be red hot on. Not whether I’m half a yard outside my box. I was livid at the time.
“We got the penalty from the cross, but it was a disgraceful challenge and those are the things we need to eradicate.”
