New Charlton Athletic striker not expected to be a starter
Macauley Bonne is not expected to be a starter for Charlton Athletic this season – with the Championship side targeting two more striker signings.
The Addicks paid £200,000 to snap up Bonne, 23, from Leyton Orient.
But the deal was still set to happen even if Charlton had not won promotion from League One in May.
Charlton manager Lee Bowyer said: “We were bringing him in to play alongside Lyle [Taylor].
“But us being in the Championship might be a bit too much too soon. He won’t be starting, unless we get injuries.
“He’ll be one looking to develop and improve a bit before we introduce him. We don’t want to chuck him in on the first day of the season and people expect him to be a world-beater and do what Karlan [Grant] did. It is just not going to be like that.
“He’s one we’ll look to develop and he will play in parts. But he won’t be our main striker.
“We’re looking to bring in two more. Someone to play alongside Lyle, that’s what we’re looking to do.”
