New Dons head coach looking to add consistency – as Peterborough’s pace helps them motor on in League One
BY LAURENCE LOWNE
If there is one thing to be learned from the defeat at Peterborough it is that pace tells. There are two ways to stop these forays. The old style Wimbledon way would be hacking the player down – regretfully in the present climate that would mean red cards galore.
Is the team too nice, is a question often asked by the various Facebook groups? The better way is to cut off supply to the player or players with speed at their disposal – the likes of Siriki Dembele.
It takes time for players to understand what is required under a new boss. This was only Mark Robinson’s second game in charge, and first since being appointed head coach on a permanent basis.
In the first half, it was evident the players understood tracking back, covering and cutting off the supply, but Peterborough changed things just before half time, and Wimbledon were unable to cope.
In the 49th and 52nd minutes, Peterborough made their breakthrough with skill, direct running and movement off the ball for Sammie Szmodics to score twice from inside the penalty box.
The even first half, in which Wimbledon had the best of the chances, was soon a distant memory.
Robinson is looking for a leader on the pitch to recognise when things are drifting, and to bring the team back on track. Alex Woodyard was the latest to wear the captain’s armband against his former side, and was busy all over the pitch encouraging his colleagues. Whether he is the long-term solution shall be decided over the next few matches, starting with Gillingham on Tuesday.
The game is about results, and consistency. Peterborough are on a fine run of consistent results and rightfully sit second in the League One table.
That consistency is what Robinson is now seeking from his team. One bright spot is that debutant Shayon Harrison’s ankle injury does not seem as serious as first feared.
Star Man: Nesta Guinness-Walker. Adds lots to the attack.
Best Moment: Great interchange play between Joe Pigott, Shayon Harrison and Ryan Longman, which saw the home keeper save at the second attempt.
