Nigel Adkins on his call to promote Jason Euell to first-team coach at Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic manager Nigel Adkins has explained why he promoted Jason Euell to first-team coach.

The former Addicks and Wimbledon midfielder had previously been in charge of the club’s U23 side but stepped up at the start of this month.

Euell made 171 appearances and scored 39 goals in two spells for Charlton. He is also a coach for England U20s.

Adkins told the South London Press: “Jason has got a very good reputation. I joined the football club on my own, not knowing everybody.

“We always like to do a lot of coaching and you can’t do it all yourself. We want to make sure there is a pathway, not just for players – but for coaches. I always like to have a couple of coaches with me for the first team.

“For example I’ve had Andy Crosby-Dean Wilkins, Andy Crosby-Tony Pennock and Andy Crosby-Ian Baraclough. It’s important I’ve got all the coaches we need to coach. I like to do a lot of it, but there are others who can coach and I can observe as well.

“Likewise I’m trying to make sure they develop. They have got to have coaching time. I want them [Johnnie Jackson and Euell] to both be managers down the line. It’s how I can help them? It allows me to observe and communicate. We video all the training sessions as well, we’ll use the classroom a lot.

“I’ve been delighted with Johnnie and Jason’s contribution since I’ve come to the club – really good.

“The sports science is important with Josh Hornby, the medical team – Danny Murphy coming in and overseeing. Brett [Shaw] in the analyst department. It’s important everyone is working together so that we surround the players with the best expertise we can. They have to step up and be elite professionals.”
