Non-league round-up: Cray Valley drop points in Isthmian Premier promotion chase as Welling sink into National League South relegation zone.
Marcel Barrington and Sonny Black put Steve McKimm’s side into a 2-1 lead before half-time. Joe Moore equalised for Chichester with five minutes of normal time remaining.
Cray are seven points behind leaders Dartford but have a game in hand over their title rivals.
McKimm said: “I’m very disappointed they have scored two goals from set pieces when people are given men to mark and we have given them free headers in our six-yard box. It’s not good enough.
“We didn’t have the composure to clear our lines properly. That is devastating with the size of my squad. The players that are marking are over 6ft and should be able to deal with that.”
The Millers head to third-placed Horsham on Saturday.
Dulwich Hamlet picked up a point in their fight to move away from Isthmian League Premier Division drop danger after a goalless draw with fellow strugglers Hastings United.
Bradley Quinton’s side are seven points clear from the bottom four and are unbeaten in their last three league outings.
They have also kept two clean sheets in that period and face mid-table Potters Bar Town this weekend.
Quinton said: “We had two or three chances in the first half and another two chances in the second half, so my chat after the game was to explain that we have come a long way to say: A point away from home is not enough for us.
“That’s being really honest with the guys. We played the conditions today and four or five weeks ago we probably would have crumbled.
“There were good performances and characters today – we can take that as a positive.
“We will take a point even though I’m disappointed we haven’t taken three. We need that calmness in front of goal – taking a deep breath rather than smashing it.”
Cray Wanderers extended their unbeaten run to three games in the same league with a 2-1 home win over Cheshunt, Nyren Clunis and Soul Kader netting.
Welling United dropped into the National League South relegation zone after a 1-0 defeat at home to league leaders Dorking Wanderers.
The Wings went behind after seven minutes.
Rod Stringer’s side have won once in their last eight matches and are a point off safety.
“I don’t know why we have an achilles heel,” said Stringer. “We start and give everybody a one-goal lead. I don’t get that. We started the game okay and then they got a sloppy ball in the box to score.
“It was disappointing. We come out from our team talk to get the boys fired up – they all know their jobs and they’re a good side.
“We were very detailed in our performance. They’re lucky to go home with three points. We had four or five great chances.
“We showed a hell of a lot of character. We believed in ourselves and there was confidence in the team. But putting that ball in the back of the net proves to be one of the hardest jobs in football.
“It’s not about (dropping into the bottom four). We have set ourselves a mini-league. Today we were playing one of the best teams in the league.
“We gave a very honest performance and if we had the rub of the green, we could have got a result and won the game.”
