‘Odd’ – Millwall’s Jed Wallace has his say on Mark Robinson’s departure from AFC Wimbledon

Millwall attacker Jed Wallace reckons Mark Robinson leaving AFC Wimbledon just days after the board backed him is “odd”.

Robinson left the Dons by mutual consent earlier today after 21 games without a win at the League One club.

But the Dons had issued a statement last Wednesday backing their former academy manager.

Wallace told talkSPORT 2: “It seems odd – it’s a kiss of death, the two things any manager dreads is a manager of the month trophy and the backing of the board.

“They seem to be two things that can go very wrong after those two. It just seems odd that they would come out after 20 games without a win and now three points from their last 10 games.

“At this point to now make that decision, you can’t help but feel when you look at the impact of Neil Harris at Gillingham….have they seen that impact with the trouble they’re in, and thought better late than never, we better do it now?

“It’s ruthless. He’s done everything at the football club – he’s coached the kids and been a shoulder to lean on – whether he’s manager or not.

“The young lads have done very well this season. He’s done well to build links with the bigger clubs in the area. They’ve had a couple of lads on loan from Brentford, one from Chelsea.

“They’ve moved into their new stadium and it’s been a tough job for him. They started quite well and now they have tailed off. It will be interesting now to see who goes in there with six or seven games to go.

“Football clubs often go for the opposite. Will they go for an experienced head to replace Mark, who’s not the most experienced.

“For not only what he’s done as manager, but what’s he’s done for that football club, he deserves more than 48 words [length of the statement] and he can walk out with his head held high.“
