‘Old-school’ – Dons boss delivers verdict on the signing of Hereford winger McLean

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson has described new signing Ryan McLean as an “old-school” winger.

The 23-year-old joined the Dons last week on an initial two-year contract – with an option for a further 12 months.

He scored 13 goals in 81 National League North outings for Hereford after joining from Newcastle Town in 2021.

Wimbledon paid an undisclosed fee to Hereford to secure the forward’s services.

“It was one that was brought to my attention in the last few weeks by Craig Cope,” Jackson told the South London Press.

“I don’t know much about the league and Hereford as such, but I had a look at his clips online and looked at some of his games – I really liked what I saw.

“He’s a young and exciting player who wants to get at people and is very direct – he’s an old-school winger.

“He wants to get on the ball and get at people. I thought it would be something that would be very useful to us, and he’s keen to make that next step in his career.

“He’s never been full time or played league football before, but he’s young and hungry – he wants to crack on.

“Sometimes you can unearth gems with lads that have a point to prove and want to take that next step in their career.”
