Oliver Glasner delivers verdict on Justin Devenny’s Crystal Palace debut and explains Marc Guehi tactical switch
Oliver Glasner wanted Crystal Palace’s senior players to support Justin Devenny more during his Premier League debut.
The 21-year-old was thrust into a starting role for the first time since joining the club’s academy from Airdrieonians in August 2023.
Devenny won three tackles and only lost possession once during his 74-minute spell on the Selhurst Park pitch.
He was replaced by Jeffrey Schlupp.
“It was okay from him,” said Glasner. “It was a difficult game. We can’t expect a player who is making his debut to lead the team in midfield.
“He needs more support from the experienced players around him. We didn’t support him like everybody wanted.
“It looked like everybody was thinking about himself more – what they could do and how they could help the team. It was tough for him. It [his debut] was okay.”
Devenny started alongside Marc Guehi, with Nathaniel Clyne coming into the starting line-up to complete the back three.
“Marc is one of our most experienced players,” said the Austrian manager.
“[The idea was] to have him next to Justin for his debut. Marc did really well against Aston Villa in the last game of last season.
“He’s a very intelligent player and confident on the ball. But, to be honest, it didn’t work.”
