Oliver Glasner takes solace from Crystal Palace’s second-half performance in Liverpool defeat
Oliver Glasner says he will take confidence from Crystal Palace’s second-half performance in their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
Glasner’s side thought they took the lead after 30 seconds when Ismaila Sarr crossed along the face of goal for Eddie Nketiah to score, but the former Arsenal striker had his first Premier League goal since signing in the summer ruled out for outside.
The Reds took the lead after nine minutes when Cody Gakpo crossed low along the face of Diogo Jota to get ahead of Chelsea loanee Trevoh Chalobah to score.
Palace’s best chance came in the 84th minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta was played through by Will Hughes. The Frenchman set up Eberechi Eze, who wasted the big chance by shooting straight at substitute goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros.
The Eagles, who have recorded their worst start to a Premier League campaign since the start of the 2017-18 season under Frank de Boer and Roy Hodgson, head into the second international break now winless in seven Premier League games.
“We have to and we will build on the performance in the second half,” said Glasner.
“We had a great start in the first half with the offside goal, but then we could see the quality of Liverpool – how quick they play and how they move.
“This is why they’re maybe the best team in England. We struggled and they deserved the lead.
“But the reaction and how we played in the second half encouraged all of us. We created chances and we had enough chances to score.
“We should have a clear penalty when Marc Guehi is being held in the box with two hands.
“It’s disappointing and a little bit frustrating, but this second-half performance was the best performance of this season.
“This gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.”
