‘On fire’ – Surrey seamer Dan Worrall earns praise following latest Championship win over Worcestershire

Surrey all-rounder Jordan Clark described fellow seamer Dan Worrall as being “on fire” following the Oval outfit’s latest victory, over Worcestershire.

Worrall took 10 wickets in the match, though not before Clark had followed up an unbeaten 42 with 98 off 116 balls with the bat.

“Dan’s bowled absolutely outstanding,” said Clark. “His accuracy, his skill, his precision and intent, he’s been absolutely fantastic this season and he’s great to have in your team.”

Clark hit a hundred in the victory over Hampshire, who are Surrey’s next opponents, four weeks ago.

Clark wasn’t too upset at failing to notch up another three-figure score.

“I wasn’t too disappointed,” said the 33-year-old. “It was the sort of dismissal that happens when the ball keeps a bit low. It was just nice to contribute.”

A few eyebrows were raised when 17 wickets fell on the opening day against Worcestershire, but thanks, in part, to Clark’s aggressiveness with the willow in hand Surrey not only recovered to make 213 but also combined to post over 400 in their second dig.

“We always have belief in our boys,” said Clark. “Batting often proves quite tricky in the first session, whoever bats first.

“As you saw as the game went on it was quite difficult with the new ball and then, when bodies got tired and the ball got older, it proved to be much easier.”

Surrey fast bowler Jamie Overton has been ruled out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his back.

The County Championship leaders say there is “no timeline” for a return for the 30-year-old, who played his only Test in 2022 and was tipped to be on England’s radar for the forthcoming T20 World Cup after a successful winter in the Big Bash.

Overton, who has not played since April 12, has suffered a recurrence of the injury that kept him out for the early part of last summer.

A spokesperson for Surrey said: “He will continue his recovery under the guidance of the Surrey medical department.”
