One of Charlton’s League One competitors hit with multiple EFL charges for breaching regulations

Reading Football Club has been charged with multiple breaches of EFL regulations.

The Royals will face Charlton Athletic this season after their relegation from the Championship.

But Reading’s hopes of mounting a promotion push have been dented by the latest developments.

“The charges relate to the club failing to meet their obligations to pay its players’ wages on time and in full on or around October  31, 2022, November 30, 2022 and April 28, 2023.

“Yongge Dai, the club’s owner, has also been charged with causing the club to be in breach of EFL regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the club.

“The club and Mr Dai have until 4pm on Thursday June 29, 2023 to respond to the charges.”

Reading look likely to be hit with a points deduction – Wigan have been deducted four points next season due to the same offence.

Reading were also deducted six points by the EFL in April for failing to stay within the terms of an agreed business plan for a previous profit and sustainability rule breach.

It means that both clubs are set to face sizeable challenges moving forward. Wigan, who also lost their Championship status last season, will start with a minus-eight deduction after also getting penalised for failing to meet an EFL funding deadline. They have recently been sold to local businessman Mike Danson.

The League One fixtures are released next Thursday.
