Patrick Van Aanholt reveals what Crystal Palace target should be for 2019-20 campaign

BY SAM SMITH

Patrick van Aanholt is expecting a repeat of last term from Crystal Palace ahead of the 2019/20 Premier League season opener against Everton on Saturday.

The Eagles left-back played a key role in Roy Hodgson side’s last season, with the south Londoners comfortably escaping a potential relegation battle to finish 12th.

“It could be the same as last season,” said the Dutchman. “We need to try for the top 10 like we tried last season. We did very well so let’s keep that up.”

Van Aanholt was speaking after Palace’s heavy 4-0 pre-season defeat against Hertha Berlin. It was a worrying display from Hodgson’s side, whose preparations for the new campaign have been interrupted by injuries and the unavailability of key players.

But the 28-year-old insists there should be no anxiety among supporters: “It’s just pre-season, it’s all about getting fitness going into the league [beginning] next week.

“In the first half we were in good shape, we then conceded a goal from a corner – it was a lucky goal.

“In the first half we were the better team, the more dominant team, we had the most chances. In the second half, they [Hertha] finished their chances very well.”
