Patrick Vieira has sound advice for Tyrick Mitchell after Palace defender misses out on England call up

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira has told Tyrick Mitchell not to feel deflated after he missed out on a call up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

With Luke Shaw only returning from injury and Ben Chilwell ruled out for potentially the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury, the 22-year-old left-back was hotly tipped for a maiden call up.

However, Shaw made the squad, and Southgate handed fellow Crystal Palace team-mate Marc Guehi his inaugural call up.

Mitchell has played every game in the Premier League under Vieira and has not been booked this season.

Speaking about the possibility of Mitchell using the England snub as a driving force, Vieira said: “It’s not about him being disappointed or putting more pressure on himself – it’s about looking at where he was and where he is today.

“When his name is mentioned around being an international player and going with England, I think it’s an excitement for him – it’s an ambition.

“My advice for him would be to keep working as hard as he has been doing in the last couple of months and to keep improving.

“We never know – it may come. I want him to have that on the side of his head – that has to be an ambition for him.”

Vieira has started Jack Butland in every FA Cup game this season, with Premier League first-choice Vicente Guiata acting as deputy for the cup run.

“We did not make a decision yet,” said Vieira when asked who will play the starting role on Sunday.

“I will have to look at the week, look at training tomorrow, talk with Deano [Dean Kiely], and we will make a decision on Sunday morning.”
