Patrick Vieira hopes Odsonne Edouard is beginning to show he can lead the Crystal Palace attack

Patrick Vieira praised the performance of Odsonne Edouard in the 2-1 win over Leeds United and hopes that the forward is starting to show that he can lead the line in the Premier League.

Edouard found a way back into the game for Vieira’s side in the 24th minute – meeting Michael Olise’s free-kick and heading past Illan Meslier.

The Frenchman found the back of the net last time out during the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea after he turned home Jordan Ayew’s cross.

Edouard has started five of the eight games in the league this season and has netted three goals in all competitions.

It’s the second time the former Celtic forward has scored in back-to-back games for the South Londoners since joining last summer.

“I hope so,” said Vieira when asked if the 24-year-old was beginning to show whether he could lead the line in the Premier League.

“In the last couple of games that we played, he was really good for us with the way he linked the game and was dropping deeper and working really hard.

“He’s scoring goals, so that will build his confidence. Especially as a number nine, to play games, to believe in his ability, and try to bring that connection with the players around him.

“He was really good today.”

Leeds dominated the opening stages at Selhurst Park and opened the scoring after 10 minutes through Pascal Struijk.

But Edouard’s equaliser and Eberechi Eze’s second-half strike from the edge of the box saw the Eagles secure their second Premier League win of the season.

“It was a really tough game – really difficult,” said Vieira.

” We had a plan, but couldn’t execute that plan because of the way they were pressing us.

“We remained calm and kept our organisation. We were quite frustrated at half time, but we came back in the second half with more calmness and focus on the details of the game.

“That allowed us to score a wonderful goal – it was a fantastic collective goal. With the players that we have, we should create more chances around the box because we have a good level of technical ability.”
