Patrick Vieira outlines why Crystal Palace ‘deserved’ to beat West Ham United
Patrick Vieira has admitted his Crystal Palace side deserved their first away win of the 2022-23 Premier League season after they beat West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium.
The Palace boss also thought Paul Tierney made the correct call to overturn the penalty decision on Michail Antonio in the second half.
West Ham took the lead in the first half against the run of play through Said Benrahma. The Algerian was allowed to squeeze past Jordan Ayew and hit a thunderous strike from the edge of the box past Vicente Guaita.
Palace equalised through Wilfried Zaha in the 41st minute through Wilfried Zaha.
The Ivorian scored his sixth of the season after Eberechi Eze won the ball back from Thilo Kehrer and played Zaha though.
The Palace forward beat Craig Dawson and rifled a shot past Lukasz Fabianski.
The Eagles claimed all three points in the 94th minute through Michael Olise.
Antonio chipped the ball into the arms of Vicente Guaita and the Palace keeper set Eberechi Eze away on an attacker.
The ball found its way to Olise on the edge of the box, and his shot curled off Aaron Cresswell and looped over Fabianski to give Vieira’s side the win.
“It has been coming,” said Vieira of Palace’s first away win of the Premier League campaign.
“Away from home, we have had some difficult games, but overall, the performances were quite good.
“Today, again, it was a really good performance from the team.
“We managed to control the game – we had possession. We dominated the game, but also one of the parts of the game we really need to improve, which is trying to score goals when we’re on top.
“It’s really good for confidence. It’s a win away from home with a really good game of football. We were well-positioned, well disciplined, and we played some good football at times.
“I’m really happy with the players because, like I said, away from home, we had some really good performances but didn’t get what we fully deserved.
“Today, we deserved that win.”
West Ham were awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute after Michail Antonio burst past Joachim Andersen. Marc Guehi was adjudged to have pulled Antonio down inside the area, but after consulting VAR, Paul Tierney overturned the decision.
“I didn’t have a chance to look at it,” admitted Vieira.
“I was speaking with the fourth official, who was communicating with the other referees.
“Today, it went in our favour. But he went to look at it again, and he made the decision. I believe it was the right decision.”
