Player ratings from Crystal Palace’s 2-1 defeat at home to Spurs

Crystal Palace suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since Roy Hodgson returned to the club after losing 2-1 at home to Premier League leaders Spurs on Friday evening.

An own goal from Joel Ward and a strike from Son Heung-min put the visitors 2-0 up.

Jordan Ayew pulled one back for the Eagles in second-half added time, but they were unable to salvage a point.

SAM JOHNSTONE – 6

Could do nothing about either goal.

JOEL WARD – 5

Turned Maddison’s cross into his own net in the 53rd minute to give Spurs the lead, but won all four of his tackles.

JOACHIM ANDERSEN – 6

Delivered a wicked cross in the 85th minute that was intended for Marc Guehi, but a Spurs defender managed to get block on the ball.

Also provided the assist for Ayew’s last strike.

MARC GUEHI – 7

Excellent defensive work in the 51st minute to stop Dejan Kulusevski from breaking away on a counter attack.

Headed Will Hughes’ corner just wide minutes after the visitors went 1-0 up.

Good block to deny Son a second and Spurs a third late on.

TYRICK MITCHELL – 6

Dealt with Dejan Kulusevski well but was forced off with an injury after Spurs went 2-0 up.

CHEICK DOUCOURE – 7

Good challenge on the edge of the box in the 11th minute to stop Richarlison from bursting into the penalty area.

Completed 82 per cent of his 22 passes and won seven of all seven challenges he attempted.

JEFFERSON LERMA – 6

Vital interception to stop in the 37th minute to deny James Maddison when the England attacker was lining up a shot on the edge of the box.

Did not lose possession once.

Replaced by Matheus Franca in the 79th minute.

WILL HUGHES – 6

Played as a pressing forward alongside Odsonne Edouard.

Whipped in a handful of decent corners in the first half which caused problems for the Spurs defence.

JEFFREY SCHLUPP – 5

Pulled a cross along the face of goal early in the second half that nearly led to a good shooting opportunity.

Only completed two of his six passes but did his defensive job well.

Was replaced by Jesurun Rak-Sakyi in the 60th minute.

JORDAN AYEW – 7

Had Palace’s first shot in the fifth minute, collecting a drive from Will Hughes and firing straight at Vicario.

Took his goal really well after escaping the Spurs defender at the back post and slamming a shot beyond Vicario.

Lost possession 10 times, but that is because he’s being asked to play as the main creative threat due to the poor recruitment over the summer.

ODSONNE EDOUARD – 5

Shot at the Spurs keeper moments after Ayew’s first attempt but was unable to steer a shot from the edge of the box into the net.

Was comprehensively beaten in a foot race with Micky Van de Ven early on in the second half when chasing after a Jeffrey Schlupp pass.

SUBS:

JESURUN RAK-SAKYI – 6

Tried to bring Palace back into the game, but the 21-year-old was unable to do it all by himself.

NATHANIEL CLYNE – 6 

Came on for Mitchell and may be set for a prolonged run in the team if Mitchell is out for a while.

NAOURIOU AHAMADA – 5

Did not have an impact through the middle.

MATHEUS FRANCA – NA

The ball fell towards the Brazilian at the end, but it was a difficult chance and he was unable to keep his left-footed effort down.

JEAN-PHILIPPE MATETA – NA 

Battled well and won a header to set up Franca’s chance at the end.
