Player ratings from Crystal Palace’s dismal 4-1 defeat at Brighton

Crystal Palace suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at arch-rivals Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Lewis Dunk, Jack Hinshelwood, Facundo Buonanotte and Joao Pedro gave the Seagulls all three points.

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored for the Eagles in the 71st minute.

Here are Edmund Brack’s player ratings from The Amex:

DEAN HENDERSON – 5

Not sure he could have done much with a lot of Brighton’s goals.

Palace were cut open with ease in the first half and Pedro’s fourth was an incisive finish.

DANIEL MUNOZ – 6

Nearly gave Brighton the chance to double their lead early on but made a good recovery challenge.

Failed to stop the cross from Tariq Lamptey for Jack Hinshelwood to double Brighton’s lead.

Pulled the ball back on the edge of the box for Jefferson Lerma to shoot after getting forward well.

Booked for a foul on Tariq Lamptey.

He completed 97 per cent of his passes and always looked to go forward – made a handful of really smart runs.

Won five tackles – the most of any Palace player.

JOACHIM ANDERSEN – 5

Was done by Dunk for the opener, with the English defender just peeling away from the Danish international to head home the corner.

Was sat down by Pascal Gross for Brighton’s third – which Facundo Buonantte put away.

Great cross for Mateta to head past Bart Verbruggen in the 71st minute.

MARC GUEHI – NA

Forced off after 26 minutes with an injury.

TYRICK MITCHELL – 6

Hinshelwood got his goal by leaping over the Palace left-back at the back post.

Had no attacking support down the left-hand side in the first half.

CHRIS RICHARDS – 5

Was doing a man-marking job on Joao Pedro before Guehi’s injury.

Moved to centre-back alongside Andersen for the rest of the outing.

JEFFERSON LERMA – 5

The Colombian international had a shot in the first half that was deflated behind for a corner.

Miscommunication with Will Hughes saw Pedro have a sight of goal early on in the second half.

Lazy pass to give Brighton the ball back in the 51st minute.

WILL HUGHES – 5

Good challenge on Bunonnate in the 18th minute to win back possession.

Lost possession in the 50th minute with a wayward pass.

Made three interceptions – the most of any Palace player.

JORDAN AYEW – 4

Lost possession four times and was unable to have an attacking influence on the game.

JEAN-PHILIPPE MATETA – 6

Excellent header to divert Joachim Andersen’s cross past Bart Verbruggen in the 71st minute.

Was working with scraps in the first half.

JEFFREY SCHLUPP – 5

Had Palace’s first shot in the 13th minute after Mateta won the ball back. Saved easily by the Brighton keeper.

Replaced by Michael Olise at half-time.

SUBS

ADAM WHARTON – 5

Lost the ball under pressure straight from kick-off which allowed Buonanotte to put Brighton 3-0 up.

Very confident on the ball.

MICHAEL OLISE – NA

Needed to come off 10 minutes after he made one sprint and felt his hamstring.

MATHEUS FRANCA – 6

Instantly booked for a foul on Evan Ferguson.

Drove forward after linking up with Wharton and was outmuscled on the ball by Igor Julio.

Looked better when played as the number 10, linking up well and playing a handful of clever passes.

Fired a shot at Verbruggen with his left foot in the 80th minute – a good chance to make the game 3-2.

ODSONNE EDOUARD – NA

NAOUIROU AHAMADA – NA
