Player ratings from QPR’s 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday – Clarke-Salter and Paal impress before late implosion at Hillsborough

QPR saw a four-game unbeaten run come to an end as they lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Wednesday defender Bambo Diaby deflected an Ilias Chair cross into his own net to give Rangers the lead but late goals from Bailey Cadamarteri and Anthony Musaba meant they missed the chance to move out of the Championship relegation zone.

Here are Dan Evans’ player ratings from Hillsborough.

Asmir Begovic – 6

Not a great deal he could have done about either goal. Struggled at times with balls played into his penalty area, getting away with conceding directly from a corner thanks to a generous foul awarded in his favour. Nearly made an early error in possession but otherwise a competent showing.

Reggie Cannon – 6

Looked a bit out of sorts early on and was shown a yellow card for bringing down Marvin Johnson as QPR struggled to impose themselves on the game. Improved towards the break but was taken off by Cifuentes to prevent the risk of him getting sent off.

Jimmy Dunne – 6

Made six clearances and two tackles, looking set for a good afternoon before Wednesday pulled level. One of several who seemed to lose composure after the equaliser.

Jake Clarke-Salter – 7

Continues to show how much of an asset he is when fit and available thanks to his ability on the ball but also made four tackles and five clearances.

Kenneth Paal – 7

Heavily involved in the sporadic passing moves that QPR put together and never let the side down defensively.

Elijah Dixon-Bonner – 6

Held his own in midfield in the first half before filling in well at right back after the break.

Sam Field – 5

Continues to struggle when trying to help the team move the ball up the pitch, made a few good interventions in midfield but made two late challenges in the second half that could have seen him earn more than just a single booking. Missed a good chance to put his side 2-0 up late on.

Andre Dozzell – 6

Some bright moments in the first half playing on the left side of central midfield. Combined well with Paal and Ilias Chair a few times in the bright spell leading up to the goal. Quiet in the second half and was taken off late on after picking up a booking.

Paul Smyth – 5

A quiet afternoon for the winger with few opportunities to use his pace as attacks were largely focused down the left flank. Taken off for Osman Kakay as QPR tried to hold on to the win.

Sinclair Armstrong – 6

Started brightly with a few determined runs down the left but QPR became a better team when they stopped playing long to him and took better care of the ball. Taken off at the break.

Ilias Chair – 7

Only involved in flashes but regularly showed he is far too good to be playing at the wrong end of the Championship. QPR’s opener has gone down as an own goal but it was his wicked cross-shot from the left that caused it.

Subs:

Chris Willock – 6

A couple of good flashes when he combined with Chair but had no consistent impact.

Lyndon Dykes – 6

Put himself about and battled well but was starved of service as QPR bunkered down to try and hold on for victory.

Osman Kakay – 6

Solid again, making two clearances and a block in just over 20 minutes on the field.

Steve Cook – NA

Not massively involved but decision to bring him on and change to a back five did not work.
