Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley has his say on play-off chase as Charlton no longer have top-six finish under their control

BY DANIEL MARSH

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley won’t be glued to the television ahead of Charlton’s game-in-hand on their play-off rivals on Tuesday night.

The Addicks host Lincoln City, already assured of a play-off place, at the Valley on Tuesday night, needing a win to take the race for sixth place down to the final day.

Pompey are in the driving seat after today’s 3-1 triumph over AFC Wimbledon. They are sixth with a one point cushion over Oxford and a four point advantage over Charlton, who have a game in hand.

But Cowley isn’t concerned about anything other than Portsmouth’s game next Sunday, with their destiny in their own hands.

“There’s lots that can happen, isn’t there?” said the Pompey chief.

“It’s up to us. I expect we’ll have to win. It’s just about us and executing a performance and doing our job. It won’t be easy for Oxford, it won’t be easy for Charlton. It won’t be easy for any of us to win the game, but we go into the final game with it in our hands and that’s what we wanted to do.

“I’ve done this many times before, I’ve had lots of final days and I know what they involve. It’ll be high pressure. There’ll be a lot of variables that we can’t control, and what we have to do is have laser-sharp focus on the factors that we can control and that we find a way of winning the game.”
