Portsmouth boss: Dons put us under major pressure – but we could have been in cruise control

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Kenny Jackett praised his Portsmouth side for surviving an AFC Wimbledon onslaught in the closing stages of Saturday’s 2-1 win.

The Dons were comprehensively outplayed in the first half at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. But half-time substitute James Hanson banged in a fine first goal for the South Londoners to halve the deficit.

Pompey manager Jackett said: “For an hour we were very, very good. I would have loved to have got the third goal because then it is going to be a cruise for us.

“Goals change games and Hanson’s is a great strike. It is a mistake by ourselves, we played inside football in our defensive third and he’s taken it very well – put it in the top corner.

“I’m pleased with the players in the last half hour. We found a way to see it through. It wasn’t as comfortable as it looked at one stage.

“Fair play to Wimbledon, they made the last 30 minutes very difficult for us. They put a lot of pressure on us and we did well to come through it.

“With the three subs on they got some momentum. Hanson is a handful, isn’t he? He scored a great opportunist goal. It’s given him a shooting chance and my keeper had no chance.”
