‘Pre-season results do matter – we’re trying to set a winning mentality’ – Charlton boss on friendly programme

Charlton Athletic manager Dean Holden is looking for his side to finish their pre-season campaign with an unbeaten record as they finish off with Aberdeen at The Valley on Saturday.

The Addicks impressed in a 2-2 draw at Millwall on Tuesday night.

Karoy Anderson and Charlie Kirk had put the League One club 2-0 ahead at the break. Kevin Nisbet and Aidomo Emakhu responded in the second half.

“They do matter,” said Holden, when asked by the South London Press how much stock he put by the results in pre-season. “Pre-season is about preparing you for a season. You want to get through with as minimal injuries as you can, to be as fit as you can and as organised as you can.

“We’re looking to be as adaptable as we need to be – but we’re trying to instil a winning mentality.

“They (results) do matter. We’re unbeaten through pre-season and I’m disappointed we didn’t win tonight (Tuesday). We’re going into the last game unbeaten and a really good test against a good Aberdeen side.”

Centre-back Michael Hector did not feature against the Lions. Lloyd Jones (illness) and Ashley Maynard-Brewer (back spasm) also sat the match out.

“Michael felt something in his knee, a little fluid,” said Holden. “He’ll be fine for the weekend.”
