‘Pretty fluid’ – Millwall boss planning for all eventualities ahead of Den dates against QPR and Blackpool

Millwall manager Gary Rowett says they will keep their planning “pretty fluid” with no complete guarantees yet that their home matches against QPR and Blackpool will definitely go ahead.

The EFL and Premier League postponed all their weekend matches as a mark of respect to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on Thursday.

The Lions issued a statement on Saturday stating their desire to play both Den matches this week, starting with the visit of QPR on Wednesday night.

But they added: “There are, however, considerable demands on police resources at this unprecedented time – particularly in London – and such pressures are extending into the stewarding industry. The club is conscious of the impact of these factors but is working tirelessly to overcome such hurdles in order to meet the necessary safety regulations required to host the two matches as planned.”

Millwall’s squad were still training on Friday morning when they found out that last weekend’s match at Sunderland was not going ahead.

Rowett told the South London Press: “We’ve had to plan for all eventualities, just like we will for this week.

“We trained on Friday and found out just before getting to the end of training, so we were able to extend training a little bit longer – do a little bit more.

“We came in Saturday morning to almost resemble a game for about an hour to keep the players in a bit of rhythm and routine. We had yesterday off and then we’re in again this morning to do exactly the same again.

“Again we’ll have a plan based on what the week should look like and what it might look like, again we have to be pretty fluid. As long as we’ve got that plan we’ll be okay.

“The big thing was that the players were disappointed the game was off. The obviously understand it completely but having won the last game, and feeling in confident mood, they are desperate to go out there and continue playing to build that little bit of rhythm and momentum.
