QPR boss has message over what happens to money received from Palace for Eberechi Eze

Mark Warburton has downplayed Queens Park Rangers fans’ expectations following Eberechi Eze’s sale to Crystal Palace.

Eze, who joined Rangers following his release from Millwall in 2016, completed his move to the Premier League side late last month after signing a five-year deal.

Palace have not disclosed the fee but it was reported to be around £16.5million – potentially rising to £20m.

Despite the sale, Warburton has insisted the money will simply help reduce the owners’ financial “burden” and added the club must remain “prudent” with the money it has.

He said: “The simple fact is that supporters, understandably, get transfer money completely wrong. Say you sell a player for £30million. A £30million cheque doesn’t arrive at the club. It doesn’t. It’s part payments, [and] contingency payments and everything else.

“The owners have to write a cheque. Without the owners writing a cheque every month QPR wouldn’t exist, as with many other clubs. When you have that money come in, all it does is reduce the burden slightly on the owners. Simple as that.

“To think that you sell a player and you go and buy [another player] for £10million, it’s never, ever, ever going to happen. We’ve been down that route, we have to be very prudent with the money, very astute in how we spend the money and, as you see, we’re picking up what we’re doing.

“That money will go back [into the club] and be reinvested and simply reduce the burden on the ownership to make sure that the club can move forward.”
