QPR boss Warburton: We weren’t at our best against Coventry

Mark Warburton admitted Queens Park Rangers were not at their best as Lyndon Dykes and Yoann Barbet helped them see off Coventry City.
The R’s found themselves quickly under the cosh during the first half, however, some important saves and last-ditch defending prevented them from going in behind.
It was after Dykes’ introduction that they edged in front, as the striker had an instant impact from the bench when he struck on 69 minutes.
Barbet then helped seal QPR all three points when he followed up on his long-range drive from outside the box to fire home with 14 minutes remaining.
Warburton said: “I think it’s fair to say we could have been 1-0 down, easily. They were the better team in the first half, they were far more dangerous, they stretched us in behind, they won set-pieces and there was a very dangerous delivery from midfield.
“We were second-best in that first half. Fortunately, we’ve come away with a clean sheet but it was a much better second half.
“It’s still nowhere near the level – and I’m saying that with respect to Coventry. To win that game, and to keep a clean sheet, to get three vitally important points and not be at your best, the boys deserve enormous credit for that.”
The Hoops boss joked the first half was like “watching the youth team play” and described the opening stages as “ping-pong”.
Victor Gyokeres and Martyn Waghorn proved a handful for QPR as they both repeatedly asked questions of their defence, with Jordy de Wijs and Rob Dickie having to keep them at bay.
However, Coventry failed to capitalise and they were punished through Dykes before Barbet grabbed his first goal of the season.
Warburton added: “Yoann Barbet is a great technician, he strikes a lovely football. He put in effortless 60-yard switches [of play] in the first half, he’s got a great left foot, he’s a great character, he’s well-liked by everyone at the club and you see the enjoyment he takes in scoring as well. I love that.
“I love the fact you can see him run to the corner flag and what it means to Yoann, and what it means to the club. I’m delighted for him.”
