QPR man in Charlton Athletic loan move

QPR attacker Paul Smyth has agreed a season-long loan to Charlton Athletic.

The 23-year-old, who tends to play in a wide role, has made four appearances for Rangers in the current campaign – all of them as a substitute.

Smyth was not involved last time out for the west London side.

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer said: “I think we’ve tried to get him in the last three transfer windows. He’s quick and full of energy and fits well with the type of football we like to play.

Smyth added: “It feels great to be a part of the club. I spoke with the manager and spoke with Steve as well. I want to develop as a player and Lee Bowyer said he can help me with that, I had a phone call with him yesterday and I thought ‘let’s do it, let’s get it done’.”

Addicks owner Thomas Sandgaard said: “It has been a busy few weeks adding nine players to the squad. I am very pleased we’ve been able to bring in Paul Smyth, a player who fits the way we want to play.”

The Belfast-born frontrunner scored 15 goals in 58 outings for Linfield before switching to QPR for an undisclosed fee in July 2017.

Since then he has made 23 appearances for the Championship side, scoring twice.

Smyth netted three times in 15 outings on loan for Accrington in the 2018-19 campaign. He also spent time with Wycombe last season, scoring once in 19 games.
