Rangers boss Cifuentes provides assessment of Varane and Morgan performances in Sunderland stalemate
Former Tottenham youngster Morgan made his first professional start against the Championship leaders and did not look out of place.
The 18-year-old contributed to a battling midfield display, making three tackles along with three interceptions.
“He came here at 17 and has just turned 18, showing a lot of good things. He’s getting some minutes over the last matches because that is what he has been pushing for.
“We felt today he could be part of the team and he has done very well, so I’m happy for him and the way he plays; the personality he showed against a team that is top of the table, asking for the ball all of the time, being crucial for our build-up phase and how we attack in the last third.
“[It is a] very good signal, not only for him but for the club that we have the possibility to give opportunities to academy players and they can perform at this level.”
Martinique international Varane impressed alongside Morgan as he continues to thrive after returning from suspension following a red card he picked up in defeat at Blackburn in September.
The 23-year-old was credited with winning eight of the 10 duels he contested for, while also completing four tackles.
Varane has started every game and played the full 90 minutes on each occasion since returning from suspension, and looks set to be a key component of Cifuentes’ side as they try to fight their way out of the relegation zone.
“He has been taking steps since day one,” said the QPR head coach. “It should be a signal for the rest of the new players that if it doesn’t click in the first game [to keep going].
“I remember he had some tough periods in the first games. Still, he has the mental strength to keep pushing and training at the level he has been doing, and that comes with some rewards. Today he got the reward and was one of the best players on the pitch.”
Cifuentes confirmed that Jake Clarke-Salter missed the Sunderland game after suffering another calf injury. The defender will be assessed over the next few days.
