‘Really pleased’ – Charlton Athletic boss Jackson on back-to-back victories

Johnnie Jackson admitted the last seven days had been deeply satisfying after Charlton Athletic made it back-to-back League One wins.

The Addicks are 13 points above the bottom four after today’s 2-0 victory over Burton Albion, which built on a 1-0 win in SE7 against Gillingham on Tuesday night.

Conor Washington and Corey Blackett-Taylor scored in the opening 45 minutes.

The Brewers failed to have a shot on target.

“Really pleased with the week’s work,” said Jackson. “It was a great response from the team after the disappointment at Accrington last weekend. Two clean sheets, which is the bedrock if you want to go on runs and win games.

“There wasn’t loads in the game. They make it difficult with the long throw. They played the conditions quite well in the first half because there was quite a swirling wind and low sun that was to their advantage first half. They pump the long throw into your box and it’s difficult to stop at times because the guy [Tom Hamer] can reach the penalty box from pretty much anywhere in your half.

“You have to stand up to that. When we got the opportunities we were really clinical. We ran out comfortable winners in the end.”

Charlton’s first on 12 minutes saw Craig McGillivray claim a Hamer throw at his near post and instantly send it long for Washington to race past the last defender and lift in a neat finish.

“Washington is looking for those balls,” said Jackson. “He likes playing on the shoulder and has got great movement – he wants it in behind for him to run onto. That can be from outfield players or the goalkeeper.

“Then it’s the execution of the kick and we saw it before at Morecambe. You need to get the timing of the run right, they left it one-v-one and you’ve got to add the finish. It all came together nicely.”
