Red-hot academy striker Daniel Kanu signs long-term pro deal at Charlton Athletic

Prolific academy striker Daniel Kanu has signed a professional contract with Charlton Athletic until at least 2024.

The 17-year-old has already scored 31 goals this season representing the South London club at U23, U19 and U17 level.

“We’re delighted that Daniel has committed his immediate future to us,” said Charlton’s academy manager Steve Avory. “He fully deserves it and we’ve got the chance now to continue working with him and developing him. He’s a very well-rounded young man who recognises he still has a lot to learn and develop, but he’ll do that, for sure.

“We’re just delighted that Daniel and his family, who have supported him for such a long time in his Charlton journey, have decided that this is the place that they want to continue.

“What Daniel has is natural pace. He is exceptionally quick and has always had an eye for goal and has been clinical in his finishing. That’s got even better this season with the opportunity that he’s had in full-time football.”

Kanu follows Deji Elerewe, Karoy Anderson and Tyreece Campbell in committing their long-term futures to the Addicks.

The Dartford-based forward said: “It’s a great feeling. It’s hard to explain how I feel right now. It’s a massive, massive moment for me and my family. I’m just really happy I’m able to commit my future to this club.

“I’ve enjoyed this season so much. Thirty-one goals before the end of January isn’t something you hear all the time and I’m really proud of myself for doing this well for this season. After signing the professional contract, I just want to continue doing well and helping the team win every week.

“I always just want to score goals and keep trying – even if I miss a chance, I have the belief that I’ll get another chance that I’ll score from. That’s what keeps me going until the last minute. It’s the ruthlessness that I have inside myself.”
