Released Charlton Athletic defender seals non-league move

Wealdstone have announced the signing of defender Charlie Barker following his release by Charlton Athletic.

The 20-year-old centre-back has had two previous loan spells at the non-league club.

“The tough-tackling defender was an integral part of the Stones defensive unit last campaign and will look to kick-on from where he left off next season,” said Wealdstone in a statement on their website.

“Positioned mainly on the right-side of a back three, Charlie looked a natural in Stuart Maynard’s free-flowing system.

“The club are delighted with the news regarding Charlie’s one-year permanent deal with an option to extend, and we can’t wait to see him back at The Vale! He will wear the number three strip for the 2023-24 season.”

Barker made his debut for the Addicks in the EFL Trophy and also had an appearance in the EFL Cup.

Wealdstone finished mid-table in the National League last season.
