Return of the Mac? Goalkeeper in line to start for Addicks with Wollacott on Ghana duty

Craig MacGillivray looks set to gain his first competitive minutes this season with the Charlton Athletic goalkeeper expected to cover Joe Wollacott’s absence at Barnsley tomorrow.

MacGillivray, 29, played 45 matches for the Addicks in the 2021-22 campaign after joining on a free transfer after being released by Portsmouth.

But Wollacott has been first choice under Ben Garner and had started all of their League One and EFL Cup matches before heading off on international duty with Ghana.

The Black Stars face Brazil tonight in Le Havre’s Stade Oceane and then Nicaragua in Lorca, Spain on Tuesday.

MacGillivray has been benched for all of Charlton’s league matches this season and did attract interest before the transfer window shut from Dundee United and Dundee. He is due to be out of contract next June.

Charlton manager Ben Garner is boosted by the return of Ryan Inniss. The former Crystal Palace centre-back missed last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Fleetwood Town as he served a one-match ban for his late dismissal against Forest Green Rovers.

Striker Chuks Aneke, who has been unavailable with a calf injury sustained in pre-season, is not expected to be available for tomorrow’s trip to Barnsley.

Garner missed the Fleetwood match after contracting Covid but is now back in the first-team fold.
