Rosendale Primary School win prestigious Magazine Cup

Rosendale Primary School in Herne Hill are the new holders of the Magazine Cup, writes Gary Cornforth.

The competition, which is for primary schools in Lambeth and Southwark, has been competed for since 1934.

Rosendale, who finished second in the Lambeth & Southwark Primary Schools Football League A Division, won 2-1 against Gypsy Hill’s Paxton Primary at Rosendale Road playing fields in Dulwich.

Paxton were the surprise team of the league returning to competition after a lengthy absence to win the C Division with an unbeaten playing record.

Adriano Cilento of Rosendale broke the deadlock in the second half on a quick break after Paxton failed to convert a free-kick at the other end.

Cilento added a second goal before Khai Lutfi of Paxton scored with five minutes to go to set up an exciting finale.

Rosendale hung on to claim the cup for the second time.

Coaches Kieron Campbell and Kelsey Rookwood of Rosendale and Ricky Deane of Paxton deserve enormous credit for producing two quality footballing teams which showed great determination but with a sporting attitude often lacking in senior football.
