Rotherham loanee Ben Purrington warns that Charlton need to start stringing some results together or they risk dropping out of League One’s top six.

The South Londoners are winless in four after failing to beat Blackpool at The Valley on Saturday.

The game ended goalless, meaning the Addicks have only found the net once in their last four outings. The gap to seventh-placed Peterborough United is now just four points.

“It’s a competitive league,” explained Purrington, who joined the club until the end of the season in January.

“If we don’t string some wins together then it’s inevitable that some teams will catch us. It’s the same at the bottom, same at the top. We need to push on now, get a little rhythm back and get a little run going.

“In and around the box it hasn’t quite fallen right, or we’ve had a shot that’s been deflected just wide. Aribo’s shot was flying in, a little touch and it goes out for a corner. It’s just one of them things. A couple of crosses and stuff just need to tidy up and hopefully it will all come back.

“As a group, we’ve got to stay strong together now. You can see the quality we’ve got in the squad. It’s a deep squad. We’ve got people who can come in and deliver the quality. Nothing changes, we work hard towards the next game.”

“Same as the last couple of games really. We’re without a win in four games now. We dominated the game but didn’t create enough clear-cut chances. We had a lot of possession. They kind of sat in at times. Didn’t really look like conceding which has been the case of a lot of games that we’ve played. It’s a shame that we couldn’t get the goal and the win.

“They’re a good side. They’re doing well in the league. A few decent results recently. We knew it was going to be tough. We didn’t take anything for granted. They’ve come away with a point, it’s not what we wanted but we’ve got to move on now to Wimbledon and focus on that.”

Charlton travel across South London to League One’s basement side AFC Wimbledon next weekend, the club that Purrington, 22, spent the first half of this campaign with.

“They’re a good group of lads there,” he said.

“I really enjoyed my time there. Obviously, I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to come and play here. They’re not doing too bad. They’ve got a couple of draws and wins together now. They’re not a bad side. Take nothing for granted when we go there. But hopefully we can get the three points. It’s never a nice place to go. It’s a small pitch. It’ll be a tough game, long ball at times. The pitch is alright to be fair, you can pass it around, but it’s a very tight pitch. We’ll have to adapt to that.

“They’ve had a great cup run. When I was there we got through to the fourth round. They’ve pushed on again. Only lost 1-0 to a Championship side. They’re not a bad side when they turn up. On the odd occasion they go one goal behind and they struggle. We know it will be a tough game, hopefully we’ll be alright.

“I’m loving it [at Charlton]. It’s a great club. Every week the fans are loud. It’s a good pitch, good stadium. There’s a good feel around the place, being at the top of the league. Good players. All the staff are friendly. I’m thoroughly enjoying it.”
