Roy Hodgson outlines plans to solve Crystal Palace’s goalscoring problems

Roy Hodgson says he wants to relieve the “fear of failure” from Crystal Palace’s attackers in a bid to solve their goalscoring problems.

The Eagles, who were managed by Patrick Vieira at the time, recently became the first team on record to fail to register a shot on target in three consecutive Premier League outings.

They ended their run of three games without a goal during their 4-1 defeat at league leaders Arsenal prior to the international break.

Hodgson, 75, was announced as Patrick Vieira’s replacement last Tuesday and will take charge of the side until the end of the season.

Palace are the joint-lowest goalscorers – alongside Wolves and Nottingham Forest on 22 – in the Premier League this season.

“It’s a question of confidence,” the former Liverpool and Fulham boss told PalaveTV.

“The players out there can score goals – there is no doubt about that. They showed that last season in particular. I don’t fear that we don’t have anybody who can score a goal.

“It’s to do with confidence and how sure you feel when you get into those goalscoring positions.

“Most importantly, for us, we have to make certain that players can get into those goalscoring positions. We have to try and relieve them of the fear of failure and make certain that they want to get into goalscoring positions.

“Even if they get there and fail, they want to get there again. These are words – easy to say but not so easy to achieve – but the work we will do with them hopefully will promote that.”
