Roy Hodgson pleased to hand Premier League debut to Tyrick Mitchell

BY ANDREW MCSTEEN

After registering a top-flight club record with four wins in a row without conceding, Crystal Palace followed it up by losing their next three in a row, conceding eight goals and failing to get on the scoresheet.

The latest loss was a 3-0 reverse away at Leicester today, but one bright spot in the defeat was the Premier League debut of academy graduate Tyrick Mitchell, who replaced Patrick van Aanholt in the 83rd minute.

“It was nice to give Tyrick a game,” said Hodgson to the South London Press in the post-match media conference.

“At 2-0 down it didn’t look like we were going to get those two goals to get a point from the game, so it was a chance to spare Patrick for 10 minutes or so for the game on Tuesday.”

The game on Tuesday sees Chelsea visit SE25 as part of a packed schedule in the newly-restarted Premier League.

And Hodgson revealed that even if he wanted to, he could not shuffle his pack at the back to put an end to the losing streak.

“When it comes to the other players [defenders], we’ve got three central defenders basically,” said Croydon-born Hodgson.

“Two can play and one doesn’t, so the idea of making wholesale changes in our defence over the next games is out of the question because we don’t have the senior players to be able to do that.”
