Sam Curran: Surrey have put Yorkshire loss behind them
Sam Curran brightened up Surrey’s workmanlike opening day against Kent at the Oval, which ended with the hosts 244-6 after having been put into bat.
Curran, who hit an entertaining 43 off 58 balls on Sunday – including two straight sixes off Ollie Rayner – said the South Londoners have put the disappointment of their 123-run defeat to Yorkshire at Scarborough to one side and are fully focused on turning their County Championship season around.
“There’s no point getting too down,” said the 21-year-old. “The games are coming thick and fast, so you can forget about games you lose and keep looking forward and being positive.”
Curran added that the hamstring injury he picked up at Beckenham at the end of May, which seemed to trouble him at one point during last week’s defeat at the hands of Yorkshire was “all good”.
Reflecting on the opening exchanges in the on-going clash with Kent, Curran junior said: “Any time you get put into bat, with the rule of the uncontested toss, it’s going to be tough work.
“Dean Elgar [who made 63] batted most of the day and looked set for a big one, but it’s that type of wicket where you can get in and get out, so we are pretty happy at the end of the day.
“Six wickets down on day one is a good position to be in and hopefully we can put some more runs on the board in the morning, against some tired bowlers, put some pressure on Kent and then bowl well.”
