Selection poser for Millwall boss Gary Rowett – with Zak Lovelace set to play in U23s against Peterborough

Millwall manager Gary Rowett is weighing up which of his first-team squad need extra minutes in tomorrow’s U23 fixture against Peterborough United at The Den.

The Lions head to Luton Town on Saturday in a fixture which is pivotal to their hopes of gatecrashing the Championship play-offs.

But before that is an opportunity to get some minutes into the legs of some of Rowett’s playing personnel who have returned from knocks.

We reported earlier this week that Oliver Burke and Ryan Leonard were both set to be fit to be back in the squad if required at Kenilworth Road.

But centre-back Shaun Hutchinson remains out.

“It is a bit more positive with Hutch because he is no longer feeling his calf but he won’t be ready for the weekend,” Rowett told the South London Press. “All the other players trained.

“We’ve got the U23s at The Den on Friday and that leaves us with a bit of a decision – do we hold one or two back for Saturday or give them some minutes to put them in a better position for the last seven? We’ll have a look at that and see what we do. It is probably our last game to get some sort of minutes into anyone that needs them.”

One player who does seem set to feature against the Posh is teenage striker Zak Lovelace.

“It’s a balance with Zak at the minute,” said Rowett. “He needs to play minutes and get game time but there are matches where we want him on the bench for the first team as well. We’re just trying to find a blend.

“On Friday I imagine he will play because he hasn’t played many U23 games yet, probably one or two.”
