Sheffield United’s win at QPR is bad news for Millwall’s play-off hopes
QPR lost 3-1 against Sheffield United in their final home game of the 2021-22 season on Friday night – a huge blow to Millwall’s Championship play-off hopes.
The Blades moved on to 72 points after their victory over the R’s and the Lions now need to win both of their remaining matches – against Peterborough and Bournemouth – and hope Sheffield United lose both as well as overcoming a big goal difference gap.
Rangers took the lead through Charlie Austin in the first half before Iliman Ndiaye, Jack Robinson and Conor Hourihane turned the game completely on its head.
It was announced earlier this week that QPR boss Mark Warburton would be leaving at the end of the season and he could not end his home tenure on a positive note.
Warburton said: “The crowd have been fantastic. It’s very gratefully received and never taken for granted.
“For three years they’ve been outstanding. The support they’ve given us has been first class throughout and I can only speak with the highest praise for QPR fans.
“A manager’s job is to leave a club in a better place. I’m very happy with the reception from the fans and the comments that they’ve made which suggests they are happy with the progress made.
“The first people who should have found out [about Warburton leaving] should have been the players. Myself and the staff have a very close relationship with them. They have to be shown respect and trust and they reciprocate.
“So it’s very difficult when that comes out. There were a lot of phone calls last night, which you have to try and fend off, but you also have to be honest with them.”
