Sky Sports apologise for unfair coverage of Millwall-QPR fixture

Sky Sports have apologised to Millwall for some elements of their coverage of the recent Championship game against QPR.

There was a heavy spotlight on the fixture after some Lions fans booed the decision to ‘take the knee’ in the previous fixture against Derby County.

The South London club opted to change their pre-match approach and instead held up an anti-discrimination banner for the derby game.

But Sky Sports’ website incorrectly reported earlier in the day that Millwall’s players were still intent on ‘taking the knee’. And they did not correct or balance their story despite a firm rebuttal of their story.

The SE16 outfit were also unhappy with other elements of the broadcasters’ approach on the night.

We broke the story that Millwall wanted Sky Sports to deselect screening their December 29 home game against Watford – not feeling it was appropriate for them to be in attendance while the dispute was ongoing.

But there have been talks since with both parties and also the EFL, who were asked to help resolve the issue.

“Millwall Football Club can confirm that it has held positive and progressive talks with Sky Sports following a comprehensive and detailed complaint regarding the broadcaster’s coverage of its fixture against QPR earlier this month,” said the club in a statement.

“In meetings mediated by the EFL, Sky Sports have acknowledged that certain elements of the coverage on the day, during their on-air discussion pre-match and the following day were not as fair and balanced as they should have been and have apologised.

“The club has accepted that apology and considers this issue now closed. Millwall hopes for a more mutually beneficial relationship with Sky Sports moving forward.

“No further comment will be made.”
