South London Schools in action at Millfield Schools Football Tournament
There were 10 teams in each competition and they played each other in nine half matches over a period of two days.
The U15’s had never played together before and had a good number of U14s involved.
The U13s, although missing some of their star players, had played together this season.
U15 captain Idris Belazregue was recognized by the officials as the individual in the tournament whose conduct made him the outstanding sportsman.
The U13 team were more successful. They won three and drew one of their opening fibe matchces At the end of the first day they had 10 points and were in fourth place.
Only the top two teams contested the final. South London lost their opening match of day two to Plymouth Argyle Academy but followed up with victories over Millfield and Taunton.
Finally they faced Bath and Wells District team – with the winner knowing they would finish second and reach the final.
Jose Tenorio scored from the penalty spot after Rio Powell was fouled.
South London faced Bristol City in the final.
Captain Alpha Kamara marshalled the backline to nullify the threat of City’s centre-forward and left winger. Makhaya James, with his pacey runs, stretched the Bristol defence.
It took two outstanding strikes from one of the Bristol City midfield players to decide the match.
