Steve Morison: I’m p***** off to leave The Den empty handed

Steve Morison slammed referee Stephen Martin after he felt Cardiff City were denied a “stonewall” penalty against Millwall in their 2-1 defeat at The Den.

Morison, who scored 92 goals in 336 appearances for the Lions, made his first return to South London as an opponent. Goals from Murray Wallace and Mason Bennett sent him home empty handed.

Morison said: “We should’ve had a penalty and then that would’ve been a different game. But we’ve made two bad errors and conceded two goals, we weren’t good enough to score another goal.

“It’s a stonewall penalty, end of conversation. The referee won’t come up here and talk about it. Apparently his hand was in a natural position, if diving and stopping the ball with your hand [is natural] then it’s a new one for me.

“If we get the penalty, you saw the lift that it gave Millwall when they scored, they looked like they could run a bit faster. It might have changed the complexion of the game.

“The goal changes it, we were quite comfortable. I couldn’t see them scoring. I don’t think Alex [Smithies] has had anything to do in the game. Not saying their goalkeeper has had loads to do either.

“The penalty would have changed the game because the atmosphere would’ve changed and we would’ve been on top. It wasn’t to be, they got the goal. One mistake followed by a second mistake. As soon as it went out for a corner I knew that was going to be a goal.”

Morison was unhappy that Murray Wallace was not sent off in the game.

Morison added: “Murray Wallace, who is lucky to be on the pitch scores. He gets done for a yellow card [when he pulled the player back], then Jordan’s [Hugill] carried it across the pitch and he slides in on him and because we don’t go down and get a foul, it’s alright.

“That’s just me nitpicking, he’s made foul after foul all game and then goes on to score the goal. He’s been excellent for them [Millwall] all season.

“I’m just pissed off that I’m leaving the ground with a loss. They were to nice too me [the Millwall fans].”
